Review: Hurricane EOTech Holosight replica
Posted: Tue Oct 10, 2006 3:46 pmI recently aquired the Hurricane EOTech holosight replica for use on my G&G M4. I played back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday, one CQC game in StrikeZone, and an outdoor game in the rain and mud in Scappoose. After this weekend's abuse, I thought it would be a good idea to write a detailed review of it's performance to give you an idea of what to expect from your $170 fancy-schmancy-cost-almost-as-much-as-your-AEG sight.
This sight is my absolute most favorite accessory, ever. Not only does it look sexy as hell, it gives the absolute fastest target aquisition I have ever experienced. The reticle is incredibly easy to locate and I had an especially easy time identifying and putting plastic on target in near total darkness.
It mounts to your standard weaver rail via a single knurled thumbscrew with a large standard slot in it to put in that extra snugness with a screwdriver. When mounted on my M4/flattop it co-witnesses perfectly with a standard cut-sight and the front post. The circle reticle rests nicely in the cradle created by the wings on the front sight and the dot sits at a high 12 o'colck position.
The mounting hardware is all metal, the body is super tough ABS and the protective hood is a really nice aluminum alloy and hard as hell with a top-notch anodizing job on it. The controls are basic with "Up" and "Down" arrows to adjust brightness (push both at once to turn power on/off) and a round button in the middle to toggle from red reticle to green. There are several settings for brightness, I used the "barely-on" setting in green for CQC and the "bright-as-hell" mode in red for outdoor in the rain.
During the CQC game, I took several direct hits to the sight body and hood with absolutely no damage. When a round hits the protective hood it makes a resounding "Ping!". My rifle was also knocked off of a table and bounced off of the tile floor and slid about a foot. There was no loss of zero, damage, nothing. Solid as a rock.
On Sunday I drug it around in Scappoose while a healthy rain was falling. It was about 50 degrees and the sight did fog up a little, but not so much that I couldn't use it. I did not try to no-fog the lens, but I might try next time. The reticle was still very visible with both sides of the lens dripping wet and beaded with water. At the end of the day, I wiped off a fair amount of mud and dried it off and it looks like the day I put it on the rifle.
I highly reccomend this sight and I think that if you pick up a gun with one on it and try it out, you'll quickly start saving your milk money in order to pick one up.
