FPS Limits

Postby Attack37 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 7:50 am

With so many manufacturers creating weapons that hit the 400fps mark I was wondering if an increase in the communities acceptance for assault rifles fps should be addressed. I am not suggesting anything like boosting it by 100fps.... but maybe 25 or 50. This would make it so that people who chose to purchase the newer weapons wouldn't have to worry about shooting 10 or 15 fps hot because of a new barrel, or air nozzle or have to spend extra money to "downgrade" thier weapon.

I am not a physics major or anything, but I think we could remain safe by allowing the rifles to peak at 425fps... instead of 400. I would not suggest any increase for Bolt weapons.

Because you aren't a snot-nosed 17 year old and a regular AP member, I'll leave this thread open and be civil. Do a search, though, on the number of times it's been brought up, and been subsequently shot down. It seems like there's a new thread about this about 4-5 times a year.

its the users responsibility to make sure their replica adheres to the standards the community sets. if the fps gets raised now by 25 or 30 fps, it sets a precedent in the future to raise it again. six months from now someone can go "well, we raised it by only 25fps back then, whats another 25fps?". six months later, the same thing.

i know some guns advertised as 400fps come from the factory shooting hot, and there is a little bit of wiggle room usually at games where chrono is used. if its just a hair over, its usually allowed with a recommendation that the user look into lowering it a little bit for next time. swapping a spring out or some other mod to reduce the fps isn't that terribly difficult.

Well, I know I ran into the same thing. I got a G&P, put in a tightbore, and I had to downgrade it because it was clocking at 420.

Bleh.

We define what the manufacturers release. They don't define us. If organizations keep FPS at 400, more manufacturers will strive to stay under that mark.

My 416 shot 360-370 stock, so I downgraded it for CQC use by having AONW put a stock TM spring in there. It now shoots around 300, and has a pretty insane ROF on full auto (which I never use...). It was a very affordable modification.

Well, uh... Yes, that will happen.

Or, the end user who bought the gun can go out and buy one of the TM decelerators (or whatever they are called) to bring the FPS down at the competition they are attending.
While the manufacturers are creating the guns at 400, its the end users responsibility to keep the balance of upgrades-to-safety.
If you think you might drop a new tightbore and whatnot into that new gun you're getting, it might be advisable to shop for a manufacturer that ships their guns downgraded.
My position is that if you are going to pay money to put stuff in, you might as well pay money to take it out.

But I'm lazy.

And I wanted to keep it like it was.

No matter.

Keep your spring compressed overnight for a few nights, should drop it down enough to be comfortable if your just on the line.

Meh, leave the limits alone.

400FPS is fine.

Most people don't realize that a gun will break in, and after being used a bit, the FPS will lower up to 25fps naturally by spring compression and other factors. This is even true of the much talked about KWA line of AEGs, and with a lot of Echo1 or Jing Gong replicas being in the same range, I have seen them lower to more reasonable levels after a few thousand rounds of BBs have been through them.
A 400fps rule isn't really just a local thing either, it is pretty much the standard for a majority of airsoft communities across the nation, and is the one recognized by larger events, such as Lion Claws. By maintaining a standard like this, it allows a person from Washington to play in a game in Texas with no problems, using the same AEG they would use as a local gun in their own events. It also allows insuring agencies to have a standard by which to hold people, making it easier to regulate in a manner that allows for the use of insurance at an event.

For those who put on events the FPS limits are related insurance restrictions.

First....I appologise for starting the thread....it's damn hard to pick through to see if it had been posted before.... (Course...If I had planned maybe a word search...anyway)

I can see that if we move the fps it sets a presidence. I think the fps limits are fine and allow for us not having to increase safety because of hot guns.

Since this is obviously a thread that can now be deleted, can we make that happen??

Thanks for your input, and patience.
